The Creative Communities Initiative was a collaboration between the National Guild of Community Schools for the Arts and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. From 2001 to 2004, the initiative provided arts funding to 20 community schools in order to support sequential and rigorous after-school arts programs for more than 7,000 children living in public hous-ing. The program found that creating partnerships between the arts and local housing authorities is a viable method of promoting arts education, youth development, and community-building. This report is the result of that initiative and outlines the program, its sustainability, strategies, and special considerations.
