Living on the Edge of Cultural Poly-consciousness

The theme for the 2003 Grantmakers in the Arts Conference is "The Edge." Months ago I was informed that what the conference organizers had in mind when they chose this theme was their desire to "experience Seattle's edges," by which they meant our special, Northwest location that is literally at the edge of the North American continent. I believe the organizers of the conference chose their provocative theme, The Edge, well, because our physical location—so far removed from the very different cultures of the east coast, the south, and midwest—also creates a psychic location that is unique and specific to Seattle.
