With the conference upcoming, Miami is on our minds this month - and on the GIA website. Images featured on the photo banner throughout October were provided by GIA member John S. and James L. Founded in 1950, Knight Foundation promotes informed and engaged communities by supporting transformational ideas in journalism and media innovation, community engagement, and the arts.
Since the Ford Foundation’s institutional stabilization programs of the 1960s, arts funders have explored and implemented initiatives intended to promote the sustainability of arts organizations. Funding approaches, programs, and special terminology have been developed in support of the arts’ economic and social contributions to society. Artists and arts organizations are evaluated on the basis of their fiscal prudence and community contributions as well as artistic merit.

Always the most visible member in this small but fast-growing community, the Warhol Foundation has just demonstrated that artist-endowed foundations are not all alike and that it is, as always, among the most distinctive. Indeed, research by The Aspen Institute’s National Study of Artist-Endowed Foundations, the first comprehensive examination of the topic, confirms that we presume one-size-fits-all for these entities at the risk of misunderstanding this important, emerging field.

South Arts and Americans for the Arts have announced a partnership to bring the ArtsReady online planning tool to local arts organizations nationwide. September is National Preparedness Month, and this collaboration marks a significant step forward in the national arts readiness movement.
ArtsReady is a Web-based emergency preparedness platform designed to provide arts organizations with customized business continuity plans for post crisis sustainability. ArtsReady guides organizations through developing (or updating an existing) customized business continuity plan via four key steps
GIA’s webinars are designed for both emerging and experienced grantmakers with information and discussions that inform their day-to-day practices. These programs are free to members and available at a minimal charge to nonmembers. Past webinars have addressed topics including arts education, evaluations, support for individual artists, racial equity in arts philanthropy, and research relevant to the arts grantmaking field.

Artadia: The Fund for Art and Dialogue announced on August 3 the appointment of Carolyn Ramo as Executive Director. Ramo assumed the post as of July 24, 2012. Ramo brings over ten years of experience as a senior manager at a range of prominent New York galleries and institutions, where she has gained invaluable experience in innovative programming and artist-focused infrastructure.
