FSG Social Impact Advisors define mission investing as the practice of making financial investments with the intention of furthering a foundation's mission while recovering the principal invested or earning a financial return. Based on earlier research, FSG has observed an increase in mission investing by foundations, while at the same time, a lack of staff expertise, as well as a perceived scarcity of investment opportunities often held them back from doing more mission investing. As a potential solution, this report looks at mission investing through intermediary organizations that have the capacity to structure and manage mission investments that are aligned with the funder's program goals.
