Philanthropy’s Critical Moment

We want the next generation to say: If you think the first 100 years of philanthropy were impressive, the next 100 years were even greater. For that to happen, though, we have to think differently about how we are going to work with each other and with the public and private sectors. Gone are the days of one-off transactions. Going forward, partnerships across our sector and other sectors will be at the core of the Council’s work. The new Council will be about connectivity, networking, trend and pattern identification, and leveraging the full talent and capacity of our field and other fields with which we collaborate.

Last September, in opening remarks during a National Academy of Sciences workshop on the arts and aging, I posed some questions about research in this field. As reported in Aging and the Arts: Building the Science (2013), an account of the workshop, jointly sponsored by the NEA and the National Institutes of Health, I asked, “Are there theoretical models that explain how participation in the arts affects the health and well-being of older Americans?”

The Artist as Philanthropist: Artist-Endowed Foundations as a New Force in Cultural Philanthropy

In Chicago, the Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts will host a panel discussion on April 10, 2013, 6pm EDT. The discussion will explore the emerging role of artist-endowed foundations as a force in cultural philanthropy and in the stewardship of contemporary art and design.

East Bay Community Foundation Weaving Artists into Community Fabric

Animating Democracy has a new Funder Portrait by Ann McQueen that profiles the East Bay Community Foundation from Oakland, CA. The portrait includes an audio interview with Diane Sanchez, Director of Community Investment at the East Bay Community Foundation as well as a report, “Weaving Artists into Community Fabric,” that investigates the foundation's arts grantmaking programs:

In the arts, East Bay’s grantmaking is entirely donor supported. Three separate funds—the Open Circle Foundation, a supporting organization; Macpherson Fund for Small Arts Organizations, an endowment; and the East Bay Fund for Artists, a funder initiative and field of interest fund — together distribute close to $250,000 annually through separate grant making rounds.

Since I first announced this redesign in December, I have had the opportunity to visit and talk with many of you and share more details about this ongoing transformation. I firmly believe that my efforts to reposition the Council as a network hub will prove successful only if the Council has strong partnerships with funder networks and affinity groups serving our field.
