Who should apply

An ideal Cultural Policy Action Lab cohort member is someone who:

  • Works in the public sector (eg. city department, county agency or quasi-government authority).
  • Manages a program, project or initiative within their division and has direct budget and, if applicable, staff authority over the program or area (eg. public art manager, grants administrator).
  • Has experience working with other public sector departments and divisions across sectors (eg. parks, transit or workforce).
  • Has demonstrated interest in pursuing the objectives of racial equity within the public sector. This does not mean that someone considers themself an expert or has advanced training, nor that their agency has expressed such a commitment. This does mean that the individual leader is acting in alliance with Grantmakers in the Arts articulated constructs for racial equity in public service work and that the leader is committed to acting upon those ideas and principles.
  • Has a policy-based project they are interested in prototyping during the course of the Lab that connects to the Lab themes of art-centered, equitable public policy (see below for details of what contextualizes a policy-based project).
  • Is able to participate in the Learning Sessions (which may occur) during work hours with permission.
  • Has access to WiFi and Zoom software for remote sessions and or Google meet for work sessions.

Additional considerations in the selection of the cohort members

This program is intended for those leaders who have been working in public agencies for some period of time and who already serve in a project/program management capacity. This is not explicitly designed for those in a first position or those without some level of project or program oversight. This cohort is not designed for those working in private philanthropy or direct advocacy outside of the government. The Cultural Policy Learning Series is open to ALL interested in cultural policy and racial equity through the arts and we encourage those interested in learning more, but not currently working in a government system to attend those sessions.

This cohort is designed to work on a policy outcome.

As such, those applicants who can distinguish practice/program from policy exploration are better suited to the cohort.
