GFEM Taps Stehle for Executive Director

The Board of Directors of Grantmakers in Film + Electronic Media announced today the appointment of Vincent Stehle as executive director. Mr. Stehle has served on the GFEM Board of Directors since 2008.

Prior to joining the staff of GFEM, Mr. Stehle was a grantmaker and journalist for more than two decades. Mr. Stehle was Program Director for Nonprofit Sector Support at the Surdna Foundation, where he oversaw critical support to innovative public and independent media projects, as well as leadership support in the development of the field of nonprofit technology. Subsequently, he served as a consultant to the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation’s Journalism Program, where he led the development of the Knight News Innovation Lab at Northwestern University. Previously, Mr. Stehle was a reporter for The Chronicle of Philanthropy, where he continues to be a regular columnist.

Mr. Stehle takes up the leadership of GFEM at an important moment in the organization’s history, as it begins to implement a new strategic framework: to be a more constant convener, a clearinghouse of knowledge and research and a catalyst for collaboration among the many funders that support media and technology in the public interest. In addition, GFEM hopes to heighten awareness of critical issues in media policy and to demonstrate the impact of philanthropic support for media and technology efforts.
