This paper profiles funders based in the Pacific Northwest and their response to the economic downturn, which the authors found to be largely effective. The actions and experiences of the profiled funders offer a set of guiding principles:

  • Engage in ongoing dialogue with grantees, partners, and the larger community to understand shifting needs and resources and to communicate back your response.
  • Periodically step back and reassess your approach to creating impact given your unique capabilities and the external environment.
  • Maximize effectiveness of limited resources.
  • Collaborate with others to leverage strengths and avoid duplication of efforts.
