This play was commissioned by Americans for  the Arts and was first performed as part of the conference session, Too Progressive, Too Elite: Public Value and the Paradox of the Arts, at the Grantmakers in the Arts 2011 conference on October 11, 2011. The cast consisted of  Elise Hunt, Britney Frazier, and Sean San José. You can watch a video of this performance at the GIA YouTube channel.

Robyn Hunt is a professor of acting at the University of South Carolina in Columbia. She is cofounder and director of Pacific Performance Project/East (P3) and has appeared in professional theaters throughout North America, Europe, and Japan. She worked with Japanese director Tadashi Suzuki for more than a decade and studied with Shogo Ohta in Kyoto. She has created several evening-length dance/theater pieces, including the trilogy Suite for Strangers, which had its Seattle debut in 2004.

Reading the journals, blogs, and press in the philanthropic sector, one would think there is a conspiracy afoot to create meaningless buzzwords. Somewhere in a secret underground laboratory, teams of evil linguists work overtime coining new words and phrases designed to bewilder grantwriters and obfuscate funders' true intentions—a covert operation designed to keep grant money from being awarded.

It would be cool if this were true, but I am inclined to think otherwise.

The annual conference of the International Funders of Indigenous Peoples (IFIP) met for two days at the Ford Foundation and the United Nations in May of 2006. In her opening remarks, Evelyn Arce-White, IFIP executive director, noted that it was rare to have funders, Indigenous Peoples, and NGOs together in the same room and that the value of such a meeting was not to be measured in financial terms but should be considered spiritual in nature. The spirit of this idea was evident throughout the conference.

As with many blogs covering a specific field, philanthropic blogs tend to offer either personal journals of opinion and ideas or periodic news round-ups, brief abstracts of articles or publications and links to the original. Some, of course, provide both.
