The Medium is the Message: Revisited

Tuesday, October 14, 10:00 am–11:30 am
International Ballroom B, M2/International Ballroom Level

Organized by Jessica Chao, vice president, Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors and Vanessa Whang, senior program consultant, Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors. Presented by Jessica Chao; Vanessa Whang; Jean Cook, deputy director, Future of Music Coalition; Ken Freedman, station manager, WFMU; Frank J. Oteri, composer advocate, American Music Center, and founding editor, NewMusicBox.

This session will include AV samples of internet-based services—e.g., digital radio, streaming, rights-cleared downloads, and social networking sites—as a jumping off point for a lively discussion on how musicians (and other artists) are finding their way through the 21st century’s “Gutenberg moment.” How are new media affecting the cultural realm and what we produce, how we produce it, how we experience it, and how we share it? How is the democratization of digital tools blurring the distinctions between creator and consumer, expert and amateur, tastemakers and fan base? When do we want or not want to commodify culture?
