Nonprofit arts/culture a multi-million local industry

Despite the recession, arts and culture nonprofit organizations have had a major impact on the local economy over the last five years, as their industry accounted for more than $41 million in total economic activity in fiscal year 2010, according to a recent report released by the city's cultural commission, Art-Speak.

According to results of this year's Arts and Economic Prosperity Survey, which is conducted every five years to measure the impact of the nonprofit arts and culture industry on local economies nationwide, local arts and culture generated $41.4 million in total economic activity in the greater Portsmouth area over the last five years. That number represents an increase of 8.5 percent over the last survey's findings.
