This Aspen Institute study is an opaque attempt to identify distinctive characteristics of African American family foundations. Study data was collected in 2009 from 103 African American family foundations via surveys, 990s, and Web resources. The study author, Marybeth Gasman of the University of Pennsylvania, establishes a set of African American family foundation demographics and concludes that these foundations are set apart by their efforts to give back to and improve local and underserved communities. Gasman also provides tips for supporting African American foundation donors and fledgling boards.
